SPSS Text Analytics for Surveys – Tips and Tricks

Here I am sharing some tips on categorizations which will give useful and meaningful insights to your data.

You might wanted to know that how many said positive or negative about the food category.

To create category for this go to Advanced catgorization. Select “food” dimension,  AND symbol “&”  and then select  “positive” sentiment.

food & <positive>

Rememeber to “Test Rule” before saving it.

This category will tell you how many said positive about the food in the survey.

Same way you can create the “food & negative” category.

If you wanted to know how many are the negative and positive sentiments related to cities and then use the following:

Bangalore & [<location> +<Negative>]
Bangalore & [<location> +<Positive>]

If you wanted to create location wise airports category, then use the following:

airport & [<location> +<Singapore>]

SPSS Text Analytics for Surveys Tutorial – Part 2

In my first post on SPSS text Analytics tool, I covered how to import the file in the tool.
After importing the file in tool, it will show all the records as uncategorized.

The tool will extract the key concepts from all the records of file and we can see them in below left hand side pane in the tool. The colors represent different clusters of key concepts. The number in bracket represents the number of times this word has come in the records.
We can sort this data in different ways:
  • Sort in ascending order
  • Sort in descending order
  • Sort by A to Z
  • Sort by Z to A
  • Sort by type color
We can also collapse and expand all key concepts as shown in below pic

Also filter by concept, type, concept patters and type patterns as shown below.

All the categorized concepts will become Italic whereas the uncategorized extractions can be seen in “Unused extractions” tab.

We can filter the extracted concepts by number of occurrences by clicking the funnel symbol as shown in below pic.

In the next post, I will cover the best practices for categorization of the surveys text.

Stay tuned for the next post in this series. Please share your tips and tricks/best practices on Text Analytics!!!

SPSS Text Analytics for Surveys Tutorial – Part 1

SPSS Text Analysis for Surveys from IBM is a survey text analytics tool that provides deep dive analysis of qualitative text (survey responses to open-ended questions). It converts unstructured data into structured data; find hidden patterns, sentiments etc…

It helps us in segmenting the responses on different dimensions and then correlates it with the sentiments.

The tool combines the linguistic technologies with manual work. But as the tool has very simple drag and drop features, it makes easier to use the tool.

Click on file ->New project

Select the type of file. I am selecting .xls file type

Drag the primary key to “Unique ID” box. In my file, names are unique. You can have tickets ID or survey ID unique. The column having text on which you want to do analysis will go to “Open ended text” box. All the other variables will go to “reference” field.  During analysis you can correlate the categories built by you with the variables in reference box.

If you have text in different language and you want it to be converted in English, then selects the checkbox.

If you want to use inbuilt taxonomy of SPSS like employee satisfaction, customer satisfaction, then select the Text-Analysis package option. But if you want to build your own categories then select the “resource template” option.

The tool will crawl the data, extract key concepts, group and index the data.

Stay tuned for the next post in this series.

Please share your tips and tricks/best practices on this tool!!!
